Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)

Endovenous Laser Therapy

EVLT (Endovenous Laser Therapy) is a minimally invasive, gold-standard form of thermal ablation for treating varicose veins caused by venous insufficiency. Widely recognized and utilized around the world, this advanced procedure uses laser energy delivered through a small catheter to heat and seal the affected vein, redirecting blood flow to healthier veins. EVLT is performed under local tumescence anesthesia and provides highly effective results with minimal downtime and discomfort, making it a safe and proven option for both symptom relief and cosmetic improvement of varicose veins.

At York Vascular, we utilize the 1940 wavelength endovenous laser, the latest in laser technology, along with a tumescence infiltration pump to ensure precise delivery, enhanced patient comfort, and optimal outcomes. This cutting-edge approach combines advanced technology and expert care to deliver exceptional results.

What to Expect During the Procedure?

EVLT is a quick, outpatient procedure that typically takes 30 to 60 minutes from start to finish. Patients usually feel pressure or a mild pulling sensation. Some report mild warmth during the laser activation, but this is well-tolerated.

Once the vein is treated, the catheter is removed, and a small bandage is applied. Compression stockings are fitted immediately, and patients are encouraged to walk ensure the bandage is comfortable.

You may experience mild tightness, tenderness, or bruising in the first few days, but can comfortably return to everyday activities after 48 hours. Discomfort is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief, if needed.

We recommend you to wear compression stockings for 1-2 weeks, walk daily to promote healing and blood flow, and avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for a few days.

Benefits of EVLT

  • No surgical incisions required
  • Over 95% efficacy in treating varicose veins
  • Typically completed within an hour
  • Local anesthesia ensures a comfortable experience
  • Significantly reduces pain, swelling, and vein visibility

Am I Candidate for EVLT?

EVLT is recommended for patients who suffer from varicose veins or have been diagnosed with venous insufficiency.  For many, this therapy offers lasting relief when compression stockings or other conservative approaches have not improved symptoms.

You may be a good candidate, if you have:

  • Visible varicose veins that cause pain, swelling, or discomfort
  • Experience leg heaviness, aching, or fatigue, especially after standing for long periods
  • Swelling in the lower legs or ankles
  • Skin discoloration, itching, or ulcers near the ankles due to poor circulation
  • History of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or other venous disorders
