VenaSeal Glue Closure

VenaSeal Glue Closure

VenaSeal™ is a gentle, minimally invasive treatment used to close off unhealthy veins that cause varicose veins. It works by delivering a small amount of medical-grade adhesive through a tiny catheter to seal the affected vein. Once sealed, blood naturally reroutes to nearby healthy veins.

Approved by the FDA (2015) and Health Canada (2014), most patients experience minimal discomfort during and after the procedure. It is a safe and effective option for patients seeking quick recovery with fewer needle sticks and a more comfortable overall experience.

What To Expect During The Procedure?

VenaSeal™ Glue Closure is an outpatient procedure that usually takes less than an hour. Since only local anesthesia is used, the patient is awake throughout and only feels slight discomfort. Because the VenaSeal™ procedure does not use heat, there’s no need to numb the surrounding tissues, which means fewer needles and days of recovery.

Once the skin is numb, a thin catheter is carefully inserted into the vein using ultrasound guidance. Through this catheter, the doctor delivers small, controlled amounts of medical-grade adhesive. At each delivery point, gentle pressure is applied to help the vein walls stick together and seal shut.

Once the vein is treated, the catheter is removed, and a small bandage is placed over the puncture site. Stitches are not required.

After the procedure

While most patients return to their daily routine right away, we recommend using compression stockings for a few days post-procedure. A follow-up ultrasound is usually scheduled within two weeks to confirm the treated vein has sealed properly.

Am I a Candidate for VenaSeal™?

You may be a good candidate for VenaSeal™ if you have visible varicose veins or symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, such as:

  • Leg heaviness or fatigue
  • Swelling in the lower legs
  • Aching or throbbing pain
  • Skin discolouration near the ankles
  • Restlessness or itching in the legs

Or, if you prefer to avoid heat-based treatments, have a low tolerance for needles or pain, and want to treat large veins like the great saphenous vein with minimal downtime.
